Sydney's new immersive creative space: Brand X

The latest initiative from Brand X (formerly Queen Street Studio) - the team that created FraserStudios in Chippendale - will see six groups of six artists given six months to create an immersive environment that is part workspace, part gallery, part retail concept store.

Brand X has taken out a 3-year commercial lease underneath Zoo Emporium in Surry Hills that will offer 36 artists over the course of the lease an opportunity to develop micro-businesses and generate income from their craft.

The artists will sell the work they create in the space both on-site and online. They will also have creative control over how the space looks, functions and interacts with the public.

Brand X Director James Winter said, “We'll encourage people to meet the artists who have made the space an artwork unto itself. This constantly changing, immersive environment aims to invite the public into the artists’ creative process and build relationships with the makers of the work."

The first artists to take up residency include Kirsten Fredericks who creates crochet phallic objects, Taxidermist Eloise Kirk, and Johannes Mulijana who works in kinetic sculpture.

Located in the basement of 180b Campbell St Surry Hills, the studio will officially opens at 6pm on Friday August 9. The public are invited to attend this event when the artists will open the doors for the first time. The space will then be open every week from Thursday to Sunday with the online store launched in the near future.
